Sigiriya rock rising above green forest01 / 06

Ancient wonders

Sigiriya & the Cultural Triangle

A royal citadel above the jungle

Rise above Sri Lanka’s green plains at Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock citadel built during the reign of King Kassapa I. Famous for its remarkable water gardens, painted frescoes, Mirror Wall and the lion-paw gateway, this UNESCO World Heritage Site combines dramatic scenery with an extraordinary story of ancient design. The summit rewards the climb with sweeping views of the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya is sometimes called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” in travel writing; that is a popular nickname, not an official UNESCO designation.

Highlights

  • Climb the rock fortress and see the lion-paw gateway
  • Explore water gardens, terraces and ancient ruins
  • Visit nearby Dambulla cave temples or Polonnaruwa
  • Enjoy a viewpoint at Pidurangala, if suitable
Travel noteStart early to avoid midday heat; the ascent involves many stairs. Respect restrictions around archaeological artwork.
Temple of the Tooth complex in Kandy Sri Lanka02 / 06

Living traditions

Kandy & the Temple of the Tooth

The cultural heart of the hills

Set among misty green hills, Kandy was the last capital of Sri Lanka’s Sinhala kings and is now a UNESCO World Heritage city. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a deeply revered place of Buddhist pilgrimage. Wander beside Kandy Lake, discover local arts and gardens, and explore the energy of the city’s markets. The celebrated Esala Perahera procession is held seasonally, with dates that vary each year. Visits to sacred sites call for respectful dress and behaviour.

Highlights

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake
  • Royal Botanic Gardens in nearby Peradeniya
  • Traditional crafts, markets and hill-country viewpoints
  • Esala Perahera when dates and access allow
Travel noteCover shoulders and knees at religious sites and follow photography rules. Festival access and crowd arrangements vary.
Nine Arch Bridge in Sri Lanka hill country03 / 06

Cool highlands

Ella, Nuwara Eliya & Tea Country

Tea trails, waterfalls and mountain air

Leave the coast behind for rolling tea estates, cloud-wrapped ridges and cooler air. Ella is known for lush viewpoints, walks and the elegant Nine Arch Bridge; Nuwara Eliya offers gardens, tea heritage and a different highland atmosphere. Scenic rail journeys are part of the appeal, though schedules and seat availability must be checked. For nature lovers, the protected central highlands include extraordinary montane habitats, including Horton Plains and the Knuckles region.

Highlights

  • See the Nine Arch Bridge and the hills around Ella
  • Visit working tea estates and tasting experiences
  • Explore Nuwara Eliya’s gardens and lakeside scenery
  • Consider a guided nature day in Horton Plains
Travel noteBring a light jacket and rain protection. Rail tickets and weather-dependent walks should be planned ahead.
Historic Galle coastal fortifications and blue sea04 / 06

Coastal heritage

Galle Fort & the Southern Coast

Old streets, ocean views and living heritage

Step through the gates of Galle Fort into a living coastal neighbourhood shaped by centuries of trade. The Portuguese established the fortified town in the sixteenth century and the Dutch expanded it in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today its atmospheric lanes connect galleries, courtyards, cafés, the lighthouse and sunset views from the ramparts. The Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its distinctive mix of European and South Asian traditions.

Highlights

  • Walk the stone ramparts and see Galle Lighthouse
  • Explore historic streets, galleries and courtyards
  • Discover the fort’s layered colonial architecture
  • Pair the visit with nearby beaches or coastal cafés
Travel noteAllow time for a sunset stroll, but take care on exposed walls in rain and strong wind.
Whale sighting from a boat in the waters near Mirissa05 / 06

Ocean encounters

Mirissa & Whale Watching

Southern shores and marine adventures

Mirissa pairs palm-fringed beaches with early-morning opportunities to watch whales and dolphins offshore. Sri Lanka’s southern seas are known for blue whales and other marine life, but every encounter depends on sea conditions and wildlife behaviour. The main whale-watching window is generally November to April. Leave time for relaxed beach days, seaside dining and nearby Weligama. Choose operators that follow marine-mammal viewing rules and never promise a guaranteed sighting.

Highlights

  • Take an early whale- and dolphin-watching excursion
  • Relax on Mirissa’s sandy beaches and viewpoints
  • Enjoy coastal cafés and nearby Weligama
  • Travel with a responsible, safety-minded boat operator
Travel noteGenerally best from November to April. Sea conditions can cancel trips, and sightings are never guaranteed. Use a licensed operator and wear a life jacket.
Historic Jaffna Fort beside the lagoon06 / 06

The cultural north

Jaffna & the Northern Peninsula

A different rhythm of Sri Lanka

Travel north to discover a distinctive side of the island through Tamil culture, coastal landscapes and striking historic landmarks. Visit Jaffna Fort beside the lagoon, explore the colourful area around Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, and taste regional specialities such as Jaffna-style curries. The peninsula offers islands, heritage sites and quieter coastal corners for travellers ready to explore beyond the usual southern circuits.

Highlights

  • Explore Jaffna Fort and views across the lagoon
  • Visit the Nallur temple area respectfully
  • Taste regional food, including Jaffna-style dishes
  • See coastal villages, islands and Casuarina Beach
Travel noteTemple dress codes and photography rules apply. Allow sufficient travel time from central or southern Sri Lanka.
